A completed coastal renovation project restoring the decking at one of the Outer Banks’ most recognizable oceanfront landmarks.

Chapman’s Construction is proud to announce the completion of our work on the Jennette’s Pier re-planking project in Nags Head, North Carolina. This project gave our team the opportunity to help restore and improve one of the Outer Banks’ most recognizable landmarks, a 1,000-foot oceanfront pier that has welcomed millions of visitors since reopening in 2011.

Jennette’s Pier is more than a fishing pier. It is a gathering place for families, anglers, visitors, students, and the local community. Located at milepost 16.5 on the oceanfront in Nags Head, the pier is part of the North Carolina Aquariums family and the N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.

The re-planking project was designed to replace aging decking that had been worn down by years of sun, salt air, wind, storms, and daily foot traffic. According to Jennette’s Pier, many of the existing wooden planks had deteriorated over time from constant exposure to the coastal environment.

For a structure like Jennette’s Pier, durability matters. Oceanfront construction faces conditions that most inland projects never see. Materials are exposed to moisture, salt, shifting temperatures, heavy use, and storm activity. Re-planking a pier requires careful planning, attention to safety, and an understanding of how coastal structures perform over time.

Chapman’s Construction completed this renovation with those challenges in mind, helping replace the pier decking with a more durable, longer-lasting material designed to better withstand the Outer Banks environment.

Projects like this are about more than replacing boards. Jennette’s Pier has become part of the Nags Head experience, offering visitors a place to fish, walk, enjoy ocean views, attend educational programs, and spend time with family. The re-planking work helps keep the pier safe, strong, and welcoming for future visitors.

The project also included special care around the fish tile donor plaques that had been embedded in the existing decking. Jennette’s Pier announced that those inscriptions would be preserved on new weather-resistant signage displayed on the pier house and shade structures, allowing those messages to remain part of the pier’s story.

Chapman’s Construction works on residential and commercial construction projects across North Carolina, including projects that involve roofing, decking, exterior repairs, storm damage, renovations, and larger general contracting work. The Jennette’s Pier project highlights the importance of using the right construction approach for coastal conditions.

On the Outer Banks, structures face wind-driven rain, salt air, humidity, high foot traffic, and storm exposure. Whether the project is a pier, deck, porch, roof, siding system, or exterior renovation, the work needs to be completed with long-term performance in mind.

We are grateful to have been part of the Jennette’s Pier re-planking project and proud of the work our team completed in Nags Head. This renovation helps extend the life and usability of an important coastal landmark while supporting the visitors and community members who enjoy the pier year after year.

For homeowners, property owners, and organizations planning construction, renovation, exterior repair, decking, or storm-related work in North Carolina, Chapman’s Construction is ready to help.
